How Does Low Voltage Landscape and Hardscape Lighting Work?

Low-voltage landscape and hardscape lighting uses a transformer to convert house line voltage (120VAC) down to low voltage (12VAC – 24VAC). A low-voltage lighting system comprises several components, including a low-voltage transformer, direct burial low-voltage cable, and a low-voltage light fixture(s). Saunders Hardscape has all these components to help you install these lighting fixtures in your backyard. These lighting fixtures can be used for pathways, gardens, decks, walls, and more.

Sauder's Hardscape Supply carries the following brands: Integral, BOLD, Lumien, lume, Brilliance LED

Safety and Security

Low-voltage lights not only enhance visibility at night, reducing the risk of tripping and falling, but they also prioritize safety. With a mere 12-24 volts, they significantly reduce the risk of electric shock, making them an excellent choice for residential use, particularly if you have children or pets. Moreover, they are safe to use in wet areas, making them an ideal option for illuminating a pond or pool. Also, it is a proven practice that a well-lit property is a strong deterrent to acts of vandalism and theft.

Energy Efficient

Lower voltage means less electricity will be used. Pairing your lighting fixtures with LED bulbs can decrease the amount of electricity used even more. The less electricity you use, the lower your electricity bill will be over time. Having an energy-efficient system will also lower your greenhouse gas emissions, meaning that this is an environmentally friendly choice for your outdoor lighting.

Ease of Installation

Since low voltage lighting doesn’t require a conduit or deep trenching, the installation process is less time-consuming and easier to complete. This presents the added benefit of DIY installation. As stated earlier, with the core components, Transformer, Direct Burial low voltage wire, and corresponding fixtures, it’s as simple as placing the fixtures, running the wire from light to light, connecting the fixtures to the wire with an outdoor rated connection (usually one that incorporates silicone gel for water proofing) and connecting the wire to the Transformer. The wire does not need to be buried very deep, 3" to 6" is plenty.

Durability and Longevity

Due to their lower voltage, these lighting fixtures operate at a lower temperature, resulting in a decreased risk of overheating or potential fire hazards, extending their overall lifespan. In addition, when paired with an LED bulb, these lighting fixtures have a longer lifespan than those with traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs.

Control and Automation

Low-voltage landscape and hardscape lighting can easily be paired with timers, motion sensors, and smart home products so you can control when they turn off and on yourself, increasing energy efficiency. Our low voltage lighting manufacturers have developed smart home timers, transformers, LED lamps, and integrated fixtures. You can create a custom schedule for your lights, ensuring that they only turn on when you want, leading to less unnecessary energy consumption, which in turn lowers your electric bill.

Cost Effectiveness

Compared to high-voltage systems, low-voltage landscape and hardscape lighting are less expensive to purchase and easier to install. Since it requires less maintenance and has design features that increase its lifespan, it also increases cost savings over time.

Our resin transformers include a built-in interval timer and photocell for automated control. Choosing the right transformer is important, if you want to know how to pick the right one, check out our guide on installing low voltage lighting

Integrators

Installing your low-voltage lights in mortar applications? Whether brick, bluestone, stucco, capstones, travertine, or precast concrete, our integrators are designed for ½” mortar applications. All you need to do is install this “sleeve” before adding the lighting, and it will make maintaining or servicing your fixtures easier.

Low Voltage Cables

Do you need low-voltage cables to connect your lighting fixtures to your power source? We have a 500’ spool of 12/2 gauge low-voltage direct burial cable to help you do just that. It features a UV-resistant jacket and is intended for shallow burial, less than 6 inches deep.

connectors

Proper connections are essential for successful installation. That’s why we recommend a splice joined by a waterproof connector such as our Ideal Connectors or SureSplice Connectors.
