Segmental Retaining Wall Blocks FAQs

Standard gravity wall blocks like EP Henry Vertica, EP Henry Diamond Pro, and NewLine Regal Stone support unreinforced heights up to 4 feet (48 inches). Taller unreinforced heights can be achieved using oversized hollow-core systems like EP Henry Verti-Block (up to 14 feet) or half-ton blocks like Techo-Bloc Skyscraper. For standard blocks, consult a structural engineer for walls exceeding 4 feet.

Blocks rely on specialized connection methods. Systems like NewLine Regal Stone use an integral rear lip for automatic setback without extra parts. Pinned systems like NewLine COMPAC and Stonegate utilize fiberglass pins to align courses, while interlocking core units like Techo-Bloc Semma use a 4-core system filled with gravel alongside independent mechanical interlocks.

Near-vertical wall systems like EP Henry Vertica are built for tight spaces and steep slopes. Their near-vertical orientation allows you to retain soil efficiently without taking up excess yard footprint or encroaching on property boundaries.

Hollow-core blocks (such as Regal Stone Pro, Verti-Block, and COMPAC) are lighter to handle and deliver high surface-area coverage per unit. Filling the internal open cores with crushed stone aggregate increases shear strength, enhances drainage behind the wall face, and locks the courses together.

Single-sided blocks have one finished face and are cost-effective choices for walls backed against soil where only the front is visible. Double-sided blocks (such as Techo-Bloc Semma, Graphix, and Travertina Raw) feature finished textures on both sides, allowing a structural retaining wall to transition into a freestanding parapet or patio wall.
